Since 2007, the Solar Living Institute has partnered with Solar Richmond, a Richmond-based non-profit organization, to provide a hands-on solar installation training course to low-income Richmond residents. Now its 2-week training program has increased to a full 5-week training, including one week of solar thermal training thanks to the Solar Living Institute’s grant award from the Sidney Frank Foundation. In 2009, 3 cohorts of roughly 25 students each were taught practical skills in solar installation with a live install through Grid Alternatives as the capstone.  About 30% of these students found full-time or temporary employment as a solar installer or in other solar-related positions.
