Create your own homemade cold-process soap! In this half-day class we’ll learn the secrets of the soap-making process from choosing the right ingredients to drying and packaging. We’ll cover the chemistry of soap; how and why it works,
s="Body">(why good home made soap does NOT contain lye even though it’s a necessary ingredient!), and how these chemical reactions effect the finished product.
We’ll explore the formulation of a variety of soaps with additional ingredients such as herbs, flowers, oatmeal, etc; why to add them, and when. Class will cover simple tools and handling of soap ingredients along with basic safety measures, and a discussion of other methods besides cold process, including making soap from your own rendered fats.
Students will participate in the making of a batch of cold-process lavender soap, and will take home bars of soap identical to the batch made on class day (soap requires 24 hours to process before demolding and cutting, so the instructor will provide a completed batch made 24-hours prior for examination, discussion, and distribution to participants).
Questions and answers are welcomed throughout the class, with discussions on shaping, drying, handling, packaging, and even marketing your homemade soaps depending on student interests.
Participants will take home their safety equipment (gloves and safety glasses) along with some of the soap we make and a huge shot of inspiration. Book and resource recommendations are provided for further study. Join us for a fun day of soap-making.
