Home CANCELLED- NB 104: Building with Bamboo Jun 5-6 2010, 9am-5pm While building with bamboo, students will explore the creative possibilities for creating a transitional and emergency relief shelter. This project will stir dialogue and awareness about the realities that millions of people worldwide are experiencing in the face of displacement due to climate change and social injustice. During this hands-on workshop, students will learn about: benefits of bamboo; cultivating and harvesting of various species; treatment and preservation of bamboo poles; traditional and contemporary construction methods; integrating bamboo with other building methods; bamboo troubleshooting; and further resources to get a project underway. The Solar Living Institute will be collaborating with Nathaniel Corum of Architecture for Humanity and Kevin Rowell of The Natural Builders on this project in order to empower students to understand the realities of humanitarian work and the power of design to shelter human life on a planet where chaos is stirring.
