Internship - Communications

The Communication Interns will work closely with events, marketing and production staff, and other interns to assist with the production of in-house and outside events and outreach. The interns will assist with various aspects of planning and implementing events related to renewable energy and sustainable living education and career development. The interns will also assist in developing a quality, well-coordinated marketing strategy for ongoing workshops and special events such as conferences, PV manufacture trainings, and MoonDance (or other fundraisers).

Tasks could include but are not limited to the following:

  • event planning and program development
  • logistical preparation and materials development
  • children's and adult education programming
  • venue planning and coordination
  • purchasing and merchandising
  • web development to promote SLI programs; landing pages, blog posts, twitter feeds, updating facebook profiles
  • submitting press releases and coordinating advertising with local media
  • set up for workshops, hospitality and cleanup
  • volunteer coordination and management
  • event staffing and execution
  • administrative/ office support (data entry, file management, photocopying, etc)
  • representing the SLI at local events and festivals

BENEFITS
Through assisting with communications, these interns will have access to many educational opportunities as well as helpful skills related to professional public interaction at events varying in size and style. Depending on their skills and interest, successful interns will develop skills within the overall steps needed to see a public education event implemented successfully. Through marketing workshops and SLI events, these interns will have access to many educational training opportunities as well as to helpful contacts within the renewable energy industry and sustainable community. Depending on their skills and interest, successful interns will be prepared for the renewable energy job market as system installers and/or designers and will develop skills within the logistical and hands-on implementation of educational experiences centered on sustainable living. Interns will also acquire additional skills in marketing, event planning and program management.

QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking dynamic, organized and enthusiastic people with a passion for detail oriented planning and enthusiastic/creative public interaction. These interns are expected to be dynamic, organized, and high energy with some event planning and/or volunteer coordination experience. Multitasking and detail management is a large part of the responsibilities and these interns are critical to the quality and overall success of events. Therefore, event coordination interns must be thorough and professional with little supervision. Applicants should be flexible, energetic, comfortable in groups of people, and able to manage a broad diversity of challenges at once. A good sense of humor, positive and enthusiastic attitude, and willingness to learn are essential attributes of prospective interns. While training will be provided in all areas as necessary, prerequisite/preferred qualities include:

  • Strong graphic design and web design skills highly desirable (Photoshop Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver)
  • Familiarity with on-line Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Versed in Web 2.0; social networks, blogs, twitter, video
  • Comfortable with office technology; printers, copiers, etc.
  • Proofreading and editing skills
  • Experience communicating with the media; writing press releases, submitting public service announcements
  • Customer service and administrative experienc
  • Ability to follow through on projects with little supervision
  • Experience with event planning
  • Experience with volunteer outreach and coordination
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, online registration and tracking systems
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with changing priorities as needed
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
