Dear Karen,
In this issue, you will read articles on the new
paradigm:
fueling economic growth while creating a
healthy ecosystem; highlighted by the Good
Jobs Green Jobs Conference - a collaboration
between the Sierra Club & the United
Steelworkers -
held recently in
Pittsburgh, PA. This conference was designed
to help jump-start a powerful national
dialogue about
the benefits of a new green economy-an
economy based on clean energy, green
buildings, and meaningful jobs for many.
An article on Taking Care of Business
illustrates that
natural systems provide wealth which enables
businesses to make a profit and provides an
economic argument to help businesses understand
why they must be part of preserving our planet's
natural resources.
The demand for
our workshops continues to grow. This issue
highlights exciting training opportunities in
Photovoltaics
and Green Building.
There continues to be an enormous amount of
important work that all of us must do to
achieve local & global sustainability, and
our Solar
Living workshops can provide you with the
skills
you need.
Thanks to all of you for your support, and a
special thank you to our partners and
donors whose ongoing support make our
programs possible - programs such as our
Earth Day for Kids, internships,
and the 12-
acre
demonstration site here in Northern
California. Become a new
partner or renew

Global Warming to Effect Transport |
 |
Flooded roads and subways, deformed railroad
tracks and weakened bridges may be the wave
of the future with continuing global warming,
a new study says.
Climate change will affect every type of
transportation through rising sea levels,
increased rainfall and surges from more
intense storms, the National Research Council
said in a report released Tuesday.
Complicating matters, people continue to move
into coastal areas, creating the need for
more roads and services in the most
vulnerable regions, the report noted.
"The time has come for transportation
professionals to acknowledge and confront the
challenges posed by climate change and to
incorporate the most current scientific
knowledge into the planning of transportation
systems," said Henry Schwartz Jr., past
president and chairman of the engineering
firm Sverdrup/Jacobs Civil Inc., and chairman
of the committee that wrote the report.
The report cites five major areas of growing
threat:
- More heat waves, requiring load limits at
hot-weather or high-altitude airports and
causing thermal expansion of bridge joints
and rail track deformities.
- Rising sea levels and storm surges
flooding coastal roadways, forcing
evacuations, inundating airports and rail
lines, flooding tunnels and eroding bridge
bases.
- More rainstorms, delaying air and ground
traffic, flooding tunnels and railways, and
eroding road, bridge and pipeline supports.
- More frequent strong hurricanes,
disrupting air and shipping service, blowing
debris onto roads and damaging buildings.
- Rising arctic temperatures thawing
permafrost, resulting in road, railway and
airport runway subsidence and potential
pipeline failures.

Taking Care of Business |
 |
|
What's a
clean earth worth to your company's bottom
line?
This is no academic question. Natural systems
provide a wealth of tangible and intangible services to
business -- some $33 trillion worth of "free"
deliverables a year, say experts. Those services
include fertile soil, fresh water, breathable air,
pollination, species habitat, soil formation, pest
control, a livable climate, and a host of other things
most of us take for granted. And none of which appear
on companies' balance sheets.
And it would follow that the degradation of ecosystems
caused by global warming or direct human action has
the potential to severely disrupt businesses or provide
beneficial opportunities.
That's the conclusion of a new report, The Corporate
Ecosystems Services Review, just published by
the World Business Council for Sustainable
Development. It offers a set of guidelines,
accompanied by case studies from five businesses,
explains the steps a business should take to identify
what ecosystems it depends on and the risks and
opportunities related to changes in those ecosystems.
This is one of many places that the threat of climate
change intersects with the future of business, and like
climate change, the topic isn't about to go away any
time soon.

The Village View: Renewable Energy in Refugee Camps |
 |
|
In this issue of the Village View, we
highlight former Solar Living Institute
intern Jenny Tracy, who interned in the
summer of 2004 and is taking her knowledge of
sustainability to communities in need around
the world.
Since September of 2007, Jenny has been
working with Border Green
Energy Team (BGET),
whose mission is to install renewable energy
technology in rural villages and refuge camps
along the Thailand/Myanmar border. In an
area ridden with strife, Jenny and the BGET
team have been working to bring appropriate
technology solutions for health care,
education, and food in the community.
With local agricultural needs taking a
priority, Jenny and the BGET team installed
solar water pumping, gravity-fed drip
irrigation, and composting systems that are
appropriate for the needs of the refugee
camps in the area. Jenny also coordinated
the installation of a 720 watt solar system
that is now providing power to a village
medical clinic for the use of lights,
microscopes, computers, and a vaccine
refrigerator. The team has nearly completed
the installation of a 3.5 kilowatt microhydro
system that will provide power to the
elementary school, dormitory, and in the
future will expand out to individual houses
within the village.
The Solar Living Institute is proud to show
off the accomplishments of members of our
Solar Living family - Jenny is a true example
of one person turning their inspiration into
action!

Good News about Global Warming? |
 |
|
Amidst increasingly dire news about the
economy and
climate change, Architecture 2030 released good
news that could help turn the U.S. economic
crisis
around while dealing a much-needed blow to
climate
change. At the Good Jobs Green
Jobs Conference in
Pittsburgh, PA, Edward Mazria, founder of
Architecture
2030, illustrated how a small investment of
only $21.6
billion in the Building Sector would produce
216,000
permanent jobs and save 86.7 Million Metric Tons
(MMT) of CO2 in a single year. This same amount
invested each year for five years would net
over one
million permanent jobs and save 433.5
MMT. "Although difficult, the economic and
global
warming crises are the motivation we need as a
nation to retool our thinking. If we're smart
enough to
jump on this opportunity, we will not only
solve global
warming, we will set the US up for unprecedented
economic success," Mazria said.
