Mud has been used to create dwellings and structures since humans first created shelters 10,000 years ago. Cob, a traditional method of building with earth, is one those techniques. Similar to adobe, it uses local clay, sand, and straw to create durable structures. Our cob bench proje t allows you to get familiar with the properties of cob as a building material, in a relatively short time. We’ll review site selection and design principals, take a look at foundation options, and show you how to test for clay and its properties as a building material. We will mix clay, sand, straw and water to produce the cob. We’ll adjust the mixture to produce just the right blend, so the process of layering and compressing the material forms our cob bench, sculpting in details as we go. You’ll come away with a new understanding of cob know-how and the confidence to build a cob bench of your own.
