Thomas GortonTom Gorton is a master carpenter, project manager, designer and instructor, with over 30 years experience in the construction industry. He entered the construction field through the arts, with a degree in fine arts at the University of Washington. First working in craft and fine furniture shops and as a shipwright doing custom interior woodworking in Washington state. Then as a custom cabinet builder and interior specialist for high end residential and custom commercial projects in the Seattle area working with a variety of materials from bamboo to plastics, metals and concrete, eventually running his own company for many years. Tom has also apprenticed and worked in the industry as an electrician and an electronics tech, and a plumber, and has designed and built many permitted and approved systems. When Tom moved to this area 12 years ago, he became involved in more socially conscious and sustainable building practices, and worked on low income building projects. He has worked on projects as varied as a building instructor/manager for Rural Communities Housing Development's "sweat equity" home program for low income families using traditional materials, and more recently, as a consultant and carpenter for off-grid projects using recycled and alternative materials. Tom has just finished training in a new field as a Social Worker, and is currently a private contractor with Mendocino County teaching prevention skills in the public schools. |
